Pushing Your Stars

PUSHING YOUR STARS
If anything, some thought, Dean Smith was a little harder on Michael Jordan every day in practice then he was on other young players, as if accepting his greater possibilities and his own limitless ambition and holding him to it, setting higher standards for him than for the others. Roy Williams was also always pushing Jordan to work harder in practice. “I’m working as hard as everyone else,” Jordan answered.“But Michael, you told me you wanted to be the best,” Williams once reminded him. “And if you want to be the best, then you have to work harder than everyone else.” There was, Williams thought, a long pause, while Jordan pondered that. Finally he said, “Coach, I understand.”

Weekend Roundup

The Junior Varsity Boys basketball team won their improved their record to 4-3 on Friday night with a 43-40 victory over Avon. The Dogs were led by Dylan Whetstones 9 points and Evan Finley’s 8 points and 5 rebounds. Darayl Jordan also played a solid game leading the Dogs with 7 rebounds while chipping in 4 points.

The JV boys basketball team won their 5th straight game Saturday night at home against Ben Davis 47-42. After falling behind 20-6 in the 1st quarter the Dogs fought back behind 14 points from Taylor Shields, 10 points from Chase Dutra, and 8 points and 3 charges taken from Kirk Weathers.

The Varsity Boys Basketball Team played poorly Friday night and lost to Avon 57-34. The Dogs gave up 23 points in transition and only shot 25% from the field. Levi Roach came off the bench and led the Dogs with 11 points, while Jacob Eldridge grabbed seven rebounds.

Saturday night the Dogs battled Ben Davis, but again come up short losing 41-54. A third quarter run by the Giants halted the Bulldogs' attack. Levi Roach scored double figures again for the Dogs with 10 points, and Jacob Eldridge led the Bulldogs with 12 points. Tyler Whetstone grabbed a career high 7 rebounds on the night.

Pike's 17 points from foul line beat Dogs.

On Saturday night the JV boys' basketball team resumed their winning ways defeating Pike 39-34 to improve their record to 3-3. Taylor Shields had his best all-around game of the season while tossing in 20 points. Chase Dutra added 7 points while Darayl Jordan and Scott Hathaway contributed 5 points each. The JV boys are back in action this Friday and Saturday against Avon and Ben Davis.

The varsity boys' basketball team defended their home court with pride last Saturday night against #8 Pike. The Bulldogs held the Red Devils to their lowest point total of the year but came up short 45-54. In front of Coach John Calipari, University of Kentucky, and Coach Tom Crean, Indiana University, Brownsburg bounced back from a 0-7 deficit to take a 19-18 lead. The Devils responded and the Dogs couldn't catch up due to 17 points from the foul line for Pike. Torrey Nibbs lead the Dogs with 17 points and Jacob Eldridge added 11 in the loss. The Bulldogs travel to Avon this Friday and host Ben Davis on Saturday night.

Fisher Tigers Top Dogs

The Boys Basketball J.V. team lost on Friday night to Fishers High School 40-42. The Bulldogs led most of the game but didn’t play well enough to finish the Tigers off. Darayl Jordan led the Dogs with 9 points, Dylan Whetstone dropped in 8 points, and Scott Hathaway had 7.

The Varsity Boys’ Basketball team played one terrific half of basketball vs. Fishers on Friday. The Dogs held the Tigers to just 38% shooting in the first half and only four points in the second quarter. But in the third quarter the Tigers made a run and the Dogs couldn’t recover. Poor offense, missed shots, and lacking defense by the Bulldogs who allowed Fishers to score 38 points in the second half proved costly to the home team. Final score 45-59. Jacob Eldridge led all scorers and rebounders with 17 points and 7 rebounds. Kurtis Runyon scored 7 points and grabbed five rebounds in the loss.

Senior Jacob Eldridge speaks on 'Achievement' at Brown Elementary

With only a terrific message for students, Jacob Eldridge articulately addressed 450 elementary students and numerous faculty members at Brown Elementary during their 'Achievement Celebration Day'! For almost five minutes senior basketball player Jacob Eldridge communicated the necessity for all to work hard, be persistent, and 'do right' in order to achieve in the classroom, in sports, and in life. Dressed as Scottie Reynolds (the celebrated guard from Villanova) for Halloween during senior dress up day, Jacob put down his books during his 7th period study hall to address the eager students at Brown Elementary. Jacob's articulate delivery was without note cards or notes. As a junior Jacob averaged over five points a game for the Bulldogs. However, this year he is expecting to carry more of the load on the hardwood.
Thanks for your tremendous impact Jacob!

Teacher of the Year Comments about Early Morning Workouts

This is an email that Chris Floyd sent to Bret Daghe last week. With her permission, I wanted to share it with you. Chris Floyd, former Teacher of the Year in the BCSC, arrives early and stays late. She always does extra. Without a doubt, she strives to be the best of the best in the classroom, and most days she is the BEST in the classroom.

Her observations below mean much because in our workouts we are trying to do more than just make our players better basketball players - we want to make them better people and better leaders. Enjoy these compliments. Then, well, Coach Walter and I hope to see you Thursday morning at 5:30 a.m. as we continue to develop our young men into better people and players.

>>> Chris Floyd 9/8/2009 6:41 AM >>>
Greetings:
This morning, as I do every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, I enjoyed a cup of coffee, watching the young men working toward the basketball team, practice in the main gym.
Sometimes we look for our leaders in the most obvious places - those with a loud voice, those who are seen and heard, those who take charge in the most visible situations. Sometimes, there is a silent leadership, that is seen but not heard. Sometimes, a wonderful thing happens - and leadership is fostered, encouraged and shared. This is what I have seen with these young men.
Coach Kendrick leads with a silent hand (because of ISHAA!),but he doesn't even have to lead. Stepping up to work with the others, is a series of players. They teach, they encourage, they mentor - they work with all of those characteristics that we value in student leaders. Right now, all of them are equal, as the team has not been decided, and all of them have every opportunity to step up - step forward, and make a difference.

In a very short time period, I have gained more respect for some of these players, many of whom I have had in the classroom as students. They each bring something different to the court, and it is wonderful to see them playing toward their strengths, and working to strengthen their weaknesses. I don't know if they quite realize what is going on with themselves right now, but the potential for every one of them to be a leader is right there.

It comforts me to know that we do have students who are taking the lead, in so many ways. When its all said and done, what we do with these students in the classroom, is reflected in their behavior on the court. That's why its so important to reach each one individually. Because as individuals - while they have strengths - they stand alone. As a team, they have the strength of all together, and the collective knowledge - drive - heart - and respect.

I've never coached (for real anyway!), and I've never been able to experience this before. I thank Coach Kendrick for inviting me down there - because this is one of the best learning experiences I've had in a while!
Just wanted to share....

For the safety of our family.....

Fellas,
I remember the invincible feeling I possessed as a skinny but ripped high school athlete. No I didn't have guns like any of you because I wasn't in Mr. Neese's weight class. But I felt the same notoriety and ego inflating emotions that all of you enjoy because of your hard work and success as athletes. This post is to quickly remind you that you too, Superman, have many kryptonites present in your world. You are celebrated and you are a superhero to many people with young eyes. BUT, you are NOT invincible. In the face of a snort, a hit, a pill, a sip, a shot, a dare, a stupid decision, or a careless act it could all end. If this is harsh; so be it. I care enough to say it to you because you matter to me. Watch the Youtube video without your younger siblings around.

Make a Positive Impact

Our team accomplished much this summer; however, nothing was as important as making a positive impact on the community. This occurred often but specifically during the Race Across Hendrick’s County in which our players helped contestants shoot a lay-up, free-throw, and three pointer blind folded at William’s Park. Our players made another positive impact helping with “Lunch Bunch” sponsored by the Hendricks County Community Foundation. “Lunch Bunch” distributes over 250 lunches and books each week throughout the summer at the town hall. Our players served, entertained, and befriended many adults and elementary age students at this event. Thank you Marge Rickman, former principal at Eagle Elementary, for recognizing our players for what they are – wonderful young men making a difference. Thank you players for being selfless enough to make this impact. Fans, enjoy Mrs. Rickman’s kind letter about your Bulldogs.

MENTAL EDGE

Hodenfield, Chris. “Mental Edge.” SKY. August 2009: 76-84

”Williams wins with fight and belief. All you have to do is look at her body language in pressure-packed moments - she always stays very positive.”
“You have to have an insatiable desire to win but also not to lose.”
Tony Hawk

Lindsey Vonn
Attempts to sneak out of the hospital with a broken back. Two days later competes with a bruised hip and gets eighth.
Extremely routine. First one up on race day. Six to eight hours in the gym a day in the off season.
Brian Vickers
Meditates daily.
“Genius is 10,000 hours of practice”.
Jim Loehr’s Laws for Mental Toughness
“Concentration is the ability to summon your talent and skill on demand. It is an acquired ability through practice and work.”
“Train the mind to be very focused and present-centered so our are very much in the moment.”

#1 Maintain your Energy
Eat properly for five meals a day. Spikes in sugar will hinder your mental edge.
#2 See Every Situation as an Opportunity
Believing in the possibilities creates different chemicals to be set off in your body.
These chemicals enhance your focus.
#3 Perceive all events and thins with positive connotations.
Problem – Challenge
#4 Pressure is a Privilege
“The emotions of gratitude fun, optimism and hope produce energy that make it easier
to focus and concentrate on what is happening now.”
#5 Find a Higher Purpose
“There has to be a very clear-cut reason that elevates you, inspires you, and really
rallies the human spirit so that you can stay dedicated to the task.”

Hayward recognized as the Best of the Best of FIBA U19 World Basketball

Wow, what two and a half years can do. Gordon Hayward has his goals written down. His father helped him write them out at a young age. On that goal list was to be voted onto the Indiana Junior All-Star Team. That goal was not achieved. Since then Gordon along with his teammates have earned incredible honors including, High School State Championship, Player of the Year award in Central Indiana, Indiana All-Star, Horizon League Newcomer of the year, and now a Gold Medal and named to the All World Five!!! Obviously all in Brownsburg are proud of him. At the same time, I believe there are still quite a few goals on Gordon's list that have not yet been accomplished. I am excited to see him continue to work with his coaches and teammates at Butler University to reach even greater heights! Gordon we wish you the best!

CHARACTERISTICS OF CHAMPIONS

CHARACTERISTICS OF CHAMPIONS
LeBron James, Kobe Bryant, & Jason Kidd
Taken from Coach Mike Krzyzewski’s book the Gold Standard: Building a World-Class Team (notes provided by the winningest active coach in Indiana, Pat Rady - thanks Coach)

Lebron James

· Coach Krzyzewski asked Lebron James what he thought about future teammates Kobe Bryant & Jason Kidd.
o On Kobe, LeBron said
§ ‘Kobe prepares better than anyone, I want to learn from the way he works.”
o On Jason Kidd, LeBron said
§ “I really like J Kidd, I think he is the best passer in the game. He sees things and instantly reacts. I love to pass and I can see things too, but I want to learn to see things the way he sees them.”
· This is the 2009 NBA MVP wanting to learn from another player
· LeBron’s response to Coach K letting him know that the USA team would need LeBron to be one of its leaders.
o “Coach this is a huge time for USA Basketball. We need to win now. You can ask me to do anything, and I’ll do it. Anything you ask, coach, you can count on me.”

Kobe Bryant
· E-mail to Coach K concerning the upcoming Olympic games
o “Having players have a defensive DNA and desire goes without saying. I am ready to learn and excited to be coached by one of the best and looking forward to the this of a new challenge and the joy of a new kil.”
· Kobe asks Coach K for a favor
o “I want you to let me guard the best player on every team we face. And I promise that I will destroy him.”
o Extending the message he sent to Coach K and the team, Kobe elected to not shoot the ball in the first practice. (Keep in mind that this was the same player who scored 81 points in the previous NBA season)

Jason Kidd
o Coach K wanted to meet with Jason Kidd 30 minutes prior to the first team meeting
o Jason Kidd showed up on time and carrying a notepad
o Kidd said “It’s going to be an honor to play for you, Coach. And I’ll do anything you want me to do.”
o Jason Kidd to coach K
§ “I think we need to have an expectation of one another to be on time. It shows respect.”
§ “Champions are on time”
o When Coach K talked to Jason about his role on the team
§ “Coach, you can bring me off the bench if you want to. Remember, I will do whatever you need me to do.”

Leadership Knows No Age!

Only a small percentage of young guys can come into this league and lead
Great story in the ATL paper today that compares what Matt Ryan did with the Falcons with what Al Horford's doing with the Hawks.
On a team with Joe Johnson, Josh Smith and Mike Bibby, Horford has evolved into arguably the Hawks’ most indispensable player. Horford is different because he’s leading and he’s not the Hawks’ offensive centerpiece, like Chris Paul in New Orleans or LeBron James in Cleveland. He’s different because he’s 23 years old, and not nearly acting his age. He’s different because he’s a second-year pro and leading this team —- often by example, sometimes by his words, even in the face of a veteran teammate.Veteran Joe Johnson contends that guys like Horford are rare: “Only a very small percentage of young guys can come into this league and lead. The ones who do usually are the focal point of their team. Al’s different.”
"If I see that somebody is not necessarily putting in the effort or is slacking off and it’s noticeable, I’m going to say something. I did it at Florida when I felt I had to. I did it in high school. Here, I’ve done it a couple of times. Usually I’m very mellow. But sometimes I think something needs to be said, even if I put it out there in front of the whole team, even to the point where the guys might be mad at me for a day or two. I think it’s for the best.”

Check out Coach Crean's Twitter on our "Articles for Players, Parents, and Coaches". He had a great statement that I have found so true. "A high energy player has the chance to have a very high ceiling for improvement. In contrast the low energy player will level off and break your heart."
I find that to be true even outside of the game of basketball.

Heros

In my first year of teaching I had the opportunity to coach AAU basketball with a wonderful Christian, successful player, and tremendous coach in his own right, John Martin. John helped Kent Benson achieve greatness at New Castle by passing him the basketball, knocking down the open shots, and running Cecil Tag's offenses so that Kent could score and New Castle could win. At 22 years of age, I got to coach with this well of knowledge.

Recently, John Martin's brother, Jim, passed away at 53 years of age. Jim Martin had a way with words. During his battle with cancer he recorded many thoughts, prayers, and comforts. This one below was published for his funeral and touched me dearly; I know it will touch your heart as well.

"I have always had a roof over my head, food on my table, and clothes on my back. There are many people in the world who cannot say this. So what kind of arrogant unbelief would cause me to think the God, who has provided all of this, would not provide for me in the future? If at any point, in His sovereign wisdom, should He decide to withhold from me and my life should come to an end, here is the greatest revelation of all: He has made provision for that also. Therein lies the miracle of HIS love and grace. So, what are we afraid of?" - Jim Martin 1956-2009

Julian Mavunga #4

As you walk into Millett Hall on the campus of Miami of Ohio you will notice that Julian Mavunga has quickly made a positive impact. First you see a giant blown up Red Hawk, and next to it a large panoramic picture of Julian palming two basketballs out to his side. I couldn't include it on the blog because my camera couldn't get all of his 7'2 inch reach in the viewing area. (However it is in the background of the second picture.) Next two this station is a vertical jump challenge. Kids, adults, and yes coaches too, put Julian's large size 17 shoes on, adorned themselves with his #4 look-a-like jersey and jumped as high as we can. I scaled as high as Julian did at Conseco Fieldhouse for his thunderous dunk, yeah right.
After not pulling any muscles, I made my way inside the arena and found my seat for his game. When the Lady RedHawks finished up their game I was able to make some small talk with the surrounding fans all the while living in a world of anonymnity. We discussed the local eateries, other athletic programs, and the new faces on the Men's Basketball team. To my delight a loyal fan commented: "There is this new post player named Mavunga, #4, he's fun to watch! He is going to be one of the best here by the time he is a senior. We really like watching him." "I can't wait to see him," I reply as my heart swells with pride.
The game begins. The ball is thrown up. And they're off. However, unfortunately for the RedHawks the other team is better tonight. But in the game when #4 is put in, the friendly fans behind me, and the fans across the arena, and the fans all around cheered loud and proud for our very own #32 now #4.
Let's talk about the #'s for a minute. Seems fitting that if you divide 32 by 4 you get 8 = the number of years Julian Mavunga will have played organized basketball when he graduates from Miami. Coincidence, I doubt it.
After the game Julian keeps his tradition of being the last one out of the locker room. Ha, I don't mind. Unlike Gino and his teammates of old, I'll wait, this time. We travel with his family to the 45th Street Grill where most everyone knows him. Again, par for the course. We talk school, girls, basketball, and he does his usual Coach Kendrick impersonations that makes everyone, even his saintly mother, cramp in their bellies as they enjoy a terrific laugh. It is obvious that Julian Mavunga is doing very well. I'm sincerely happy for him. I'm also seriously happy that he has a few more coaches to impersonate. Coach Coles, he's got you pegged.
Love ya big fella.

Pike hits buzzer beater - beats Bulldogs.

In sectional action at Pike versus the Red Devils Kurtis Runyon poured in a career high 16 points on eight for eleven shooting, grabbed 8 rebounds and two steals. Austin Fish knocked down two 26 foot three pointers in the final minutes, and Jacob Stevens scored six of his eleven in the fourth quarter. After being down 14, these heroics were only enough to tie the game at 48-48 with 10 seconds to go. Pike went on to score on the final possession to defeat the defending state champions 48-50. The Bulldogs out-rebounded the Red Devils by 19 and shot 50% for the second half but couldn't overcome the turnover margin. Senior Jacob Stevens scored eleven points, grabbed nine rebounds, dished an assist, and swatted a shot. Austin Fish scored nine points, two rebounds, and dished two assists. J.D. Cosby scored six points to go along with three assists. Torrey Nibbs dropped in four points, pulled down five rebounds, and passed for five assists. Jacob Eldridge scored a two points and grabbed four rebounds. Against the 11 toughest schedule in the state the Bulldogs finished the season with a 11-9 record, a third place finish in the Hoosier Crossroad Conference and a 7-1 home record thanks to the Dog Pound and many, many loyal fans! Thank you so very much for your support. J.D. Cosby, Austin Fish, Jacob Stevens - the program and the fans will certainly miss you - thank you seniors for your dedication to Brownsburg.

JD would like to give special thanks to the fans, his friends, team members, his mom and dad, brother, sister and the Berry’s for all their love and support. A big thank you to Coach Kendrick and his staff for all the hard work that they have put into making us not just better ball players but people.

The fondest memory of High School would have to be winning the 4A State Championship last year. It was a dream come true, and it will never be forgotten. JD's favorite sports team is the Los Angeles Lakers featuring Kobe Bryant. His favorite meal this year was the breakfast by the senior moms and dads.
JD’s advice for young athletes is to commit to the Bulldog Program and give it all you have. It’s full of fun memories and goes by fast!

#9 team in the Nation too much for Dogs

The boys’ basketball team came out battling last night vs. the #1 team in the state Bloomington South, who is also ranked #9 in the country. J.D. Roach and Fish both scored six points. Stevens knocked down a trey and Eldridge connected on two freebies. The Bulldogs are now 11-6, with Senior Night vs. Lafayette Jeff this coming Friday.
