Bulldogs win two over Athenians

Following a terrific comeback victory by the JV team, the Varsity Bulldog Basketball Team earned a W over Crawfordsville Saturday night 51-42. Rebounding, free-throws, and key baskets propelled the Bulldogs past the home team. The Athenians opened the game on fire and went 5-5 from the field in the first quarter. Chase Dutra and Tyler Whetstone both knocked down a duce, and Torrey Nibbs stroked a three ball to keep the score 7-11. The Bulldogs went on their own run in the second quarter behind nine points from Nibbs. The Bulldogs picked up the defense, and Kurtis Runyon scored a last second basket from a Scott Hathaway assist for a 16-6 run in the second quarter. The Dogs hung on to the lead in the third quarter and then answered big plays by the Athenians in the fourth. Kirk Weathers drained a three ball from the left corner on an assist from Jacob Eldridge to extend the lead to five. Crawfordsville answered with a bucket. Scott Hathaway drove to the paint and knocked down a pull up. The Athenians answered with a bucket. Tyler Whetstone drained back to back threes both on assists from Scott Hathaway to keep the lead at five, while Chase Dutra played great defense keeping Crawfordsville’s best player scoreless while guarding him. With a five point lead, Jacob Eldridge calmly went four for four from the free throw line, and Torrey Nibbs drained two more from the charity stripe to seal the victory. The Dogs out rebounded the Athenians 27-16, shot 46% from the arc, and beat a 10-4 team on the road. Torrey Nibbs lead the Dogs with 18 points and played a solid all-around game. Tyler Whetstone had a career high 15 points going three of six from the arc. Chase Dutra and Kurtis Runyon both wiped the boards with six rebounds each. Scott Hathaway grabbed two steals to go along with three assists and four points. Chase Dutra also garnered three assists, a steal, and scored five points. Kurtis Runyon had two points; Jacob Eldridge scored four points, and Kirk Weathers took a charge to compliment his three ball. The Dogs are 4-12 on the season and travel to Harrison this Thursday night for an important HCC match-up. Don’t forget that Senior Day is this Saturday against Westfield. The Junior Varsity game will start at 1:00 p.m.
The Junior Varsity boys basketball team improved their record to 10-4 with a 54-49 victory over Crawfordsville Saturday night. The Dogs outscored Crawfordsville 25-9 in the 4th quarter to cap an exciting comeback victory. The Dogs were led by Taylor Shields' 21 points, Jordan Reagan's 9 points and 7 rebounds, and Evan Finley's 8 points and 6 rebounds. Mycah and Dylan Whetstone also played a key role in the win with 6 points and 3 assists apiece.
